Walk around the room in a rapidly changing environment.

    Setup and Format

    • Whole group in a room

Every starts walking around. Try not to walk in circles, just fill a gap whenever you see it. The instructor will start detailing changes in the environment that affect how you walk. Such as 'a swamp', 'the hot beach', 'icy floor', 'thick honey'. Everyone should continue walking around, but alter their gait and body to the environment.

This exercise typically ends by walking through ankle-high concrete, getting stuck, then on the count of three jumping in the air and shouting.

    Learning Objectives

This is a pretty standard exercise. It's simply reacting to a description of the environment.

    Tips

    • As stated above, ensure the participants aren't just walking in circles - try to get them to change direction with a firm imperative 'Change direction!'.

    Variations

    • Instead of the environment, the instructor can call out other things for people to embody. Animals, emotions, full character descriptions, whatever!
    • You can also instruct participants to greet others they make eye contact with ina certain way. Give them a big smile! Or, they're the neighbour who never cleans up their dog's poop. Or, they're a young child who's a bit slow.
