A group scene where everyone has a feel for when they should speak, but no-one quite knows...
Setup and Format
Inspired by the card game 'The Mind'.
Give everyone a card - ideally cards 1-100, but a regular pack of cards should also be fine. The main thing is that there is an order to the cards. Players look at the card and keep it secret.
Get a prompt for a location with a lot of people and start the scene. Anyone may enter, but you should aim to have your first line spoken in order. That is, a player with the card '1' should be first to speak, and a player with card '100' should be last to speak. Each player aims to speak in consecutive order, even though they only know their number.
At the end, everyone lines up and announces their number. How well did everyone do, are all the numbers in consecutive order?
Learning Objectives
Keeping the scene fresh when you can only talk when it's your turn - the fight between silence on stage and silent communication between those who haven't entered yet. Using physicality to still be 'in' a scene, but no dialogue.
Tips
- Don't just enter and leave - use your physicality to exist within the scene before and after your line.
Variations
- Players can instead have their card stuck on their head, facing outwards, such that they can see everyone else's card, but not their own.
- Players can speak multiple lines if they wish, but the aim is to have their first line in order.
